Media & Strategic Communications in Communities

A grassroots engagement program that facilitates community access to important local and regional policy issues through print, online, and social media; public events; and conferences. Our program introduces participants to public channels; information sources and points of engagement critical to building awareness of news and information about the Greater Tulsa Metropolitan Area.

Program Details

The Media & Strategic Communications in Communities program funds all requisite staffing (Management, Execution and Administration), resources (material development, production, distribution, equipment, workspace) and related program requirements.

Grants $10,000 – $50,000

The Greenwood Institute, in partnership with The Oklahoma Eagle, has developed the program to deliver instruction, mentorship and guidance in a results-oriented manner to participants. As our goal is to effect specific outcomes and subsequently enhance the art and role of media and strategic communications current/future journalist globally we employ an innovative teaching modality.

The Greenwood Institute annually assess the program to ensure that curricula, staffing, resources and modality have been thoughtfully crafted to meet our goals, and scores them (programs) using the following criteria:

  • Staff experience; professional achievement; employment history, interpersonal skills evaluation; references and participant survey results

  • Breadth, depth and relevance of information being provided

  • Alignment of curriculum with new & existing professional opportunities and challenges

  • Course structure (class/group/cohort size, physical location, session and course duration & modality)

  • Potential community impact

  • Cost of all related aspects

  • Strategic opportunities

The Greenwood Institute requires, at minimum, periodic performance reporting from program administrators and participants. We are committed to aligning outcomes with specific program goals. All The Greenwood Institute program staff and participants are required to complete established feedback deliverables. Reporting is satisfied by leveraging digital survey and assessment tools.

A The Greenwood Institute Program Office has been established to ensure that all criteria are met regarding program development, execution and reporting. Reporting artifacts are archived and periodically reviewed as a part of our continuous improvement model. Digital copies of all program reporting artifacts will are recorded and archived.

Media & Strategic Communications in Schools

An integrated teaching model that leverages the experience and expertise of veteran journalists to provide skills development through coaching and formal instruction. The Journalism in Schools program provides financial and organizational support for teachers, students and parents in partnership with local schools, colleges and universities, local organizations and other media companies.

Students will participate in theoretical and experiential learning through courses that require an exploration of journalism and media, writing articles for print and digital media, learning fact-based reporting, critical analysis of facts and studying print and digital publishing and broadcasting. Students will also be embedded at The Oklahoma Eagle, the oldest African American newspaper in the state of Oklahoma and the 10th oldest Black-owned newspaper in the United States.

Students will work in conjunction with staffs of The Oklahoma Eagle and our major media partners, developing and executing content strategies including:

Grants $10,000 – $50,000

Scholarships $2,500 – $10,000
